Bono Comments On Review

U2 have just re-released remastered editions of their first three albums, Boy, October and War. David Fricke of Rolling Stone reviewed the 1980 Boy re-issue on RollingStone.com and it caught the eye of a pretty special reader: Bono.

The singer was so affected by the 4.5-out-of-5-stars review that he decided to post an online comment on it. In it, the Irish frontman writes that the album they are currently working on is their “most complete and radical album yet”. Bono goes on to playfully criticize their first record, saying they were heavily influenced by Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees and that most of the lyrics were written spontaneously on the mic.

He says that unlike most rock n’ roll records, Boy is about virginity and “not wanting to lose it”. He goes on to give details about their classic song “I Will Follow”, saying, “the percussion in the drop was a bicycle spinning, wheels upside down and played like a harp with a kitchen fork…”.

He praises all the members of the band -- as well as producer Steve Lillywhite -- for their work on the Boy album, but says that The Edge was the “star of the show”. Bono adds: “The Edge finds some new colours for the spectrum of rock. Colours he now owns … owning a colour, wow… imagine owning the colour yellow like VAN GOGH… EDGE owns…well I’m not exactly sure what colours they are… indigo or violet or crimson?”

Bono later uses moving words to sum up his feelings about Boy: “You can have everything: the songs, the production, the face, the attitude but still not have ‘IT’…U2 had nothing really, nothing but ‘IT’… For us music was a sacrament.”

He signs the comment simply, “I miss my boyhood. Bono, 3rd August”.

No U2 Gigs Planned
If you’ve heard about an upcoming U2 gig, unfortunately it’s just a rumor. The BBC reports that the band has warned fans that concert tickets being advertised are false. In a statement the Irish group says, “There are no tour dates for the band at the moment, so please don’t buy tickets for U2 shows you see advertised.”

When and if the boys announce a tour, they say they will do so via U2.com. The band is currently working hard on their new album, which they hope to have out by October.
