One of the last songs Johnny Cash gave to the world was a cover of Trent Reznor’s track “Hurt”. Now, the Nine Inch Nails frontman is talking about that version of his song.
The singer told England’s The Sun that when producer Rick Rubin asked him if Cash could cover the tune, he was flattered, but didn’t realize it would actually be recorded. When he got a copy of it in the mail two weeks later, though, he said, “I listened to it and it was very strange. It was this other person inhabiting my most personal song. Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive.”
Nonetheless, he claims the cover means more to him than any GRAMMY could, noting, “Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that’s something that matters to me. It’s not so much what other people think but the honor that this guy felt it was worthy of interpreting.”
