What Inspires a Metal Band?
|
Machine Head, Dragonforce, Mastodon - are these all characters from the World of Warcraft video game? Get your head out of Azeroth, of course not! They’re the names of the mega-metal rockers who are playing this years’ Mayhem Festival.
So, okay, you are finally in a band and you’ve got all of your members. You’ve got your sound, you’ve got the name, and you’ve got the dream. So how do you come up with your totally “core” and slashing inspiration? Here are some possible inspirations, compiled by Intern Samantha, from our dear (and sometimes frightening - have you seen the new Slipknot masks?!) metalheads:
----------------------
Youth, Angst, Duh Broseph...
From a young age our Metal rockers hold onto that fire sprung from the dragon that is - family, peers at school, and teacher after teacher offering that extra hour after school to “reflect.” This adorable small pink rock star child? David Brockie (lead singer of GWAR). Now you know why he dresses up like a sci-fi action character and sprays blood on people.
Art & Literature...
Art and literature inspires music, music inspires art and literature, Lord of the Rings inspire Led Zeppelin? “When magic ruled the air cause in the darkest depths of Mordor I met a girl so fair.” Look at those lyrics people, the lyrics! Okay, so Led Zeppelin... not so metal, but this inspiration is pretty universal and they are arguably one of the biggest rock bands in history so... deal with it.
Mother’s Make-up Drawer?
Cradle of Filth, Immortal, Mudvayne - just a few examples of some metal acts who can’t seem to do without a little foundation. Perhaps watching their mothers put on the stuff every morning before work made an impact on these most evil of Satan's children.
Drugs, Alcohol, Drugs, Alcohol...
Do you really think they’d show up in public wearing all that make up and dressing in those tight clothes if drugs and alcohol weren’t involved (this excludes KISS).
The Dark Lord...
An image that sells records or an image that sells inspiration to all of the young Satanists of the metal crowd? True, not all metal bands are Satanists and as a matter of fact I dare to say that most American and British based metal bands are not Satanic at all. Now those Norwegian metal heads? They’re a different story. Does anyone have a match?
Perry Mason, Not Just a Detective...
Who needs Perry Mason? Ozzy Osbourne needs Perry Mason. There was a song dedicated to the detective by Ozzy which was - surprise, surprise named "Perry Mason". Ozzy needed him, but most of all metal needed him. We salute you, Perry. |
